Our Story

Three places. One name rooted in Birdhill.

Matt the Thresher takes its name from a famous character in Charles Kickham’s classic Irish novel Knocknagow – and from the original Matt the Thresher in Birdhill, Co. Tipperary.

Where it began

Birdhill first.

Matt Donovan, known as Matt the Thresher, is remembered in Knocknagow for a hammer-throwing contest near Birdhill. The story became part of the identity of the original Matt the Thresher Inn, which has grown into a family hospitality business with locations in Birdhill, Dublin and Julianstown.

The three venues share the same emphasis on Irish hospitality, quality ingredients and a strong sense of place, while each has its own character. Dublin brings the city-centre seafood bar and grill experience. Birdhill remains the original country inn. Julianstown combines restaurant and bar with Matt’s Bakery, Café & Deli.

The group is owned by Charlotte and Jimmy Lyons.

“It’s for the sake of the little village and for the honour of the old home.”
